Why Neeraj Chopra and Nadeem Arshad Aren’t Throwing at 45°: A Physics-Based Insight for the Paris Olympics

As the Paris Olympics approach, the world’s attention is on javelin stars Neeraj Chopra from India and Nadeem Arshad from Pakistan. These athletes, who have consistently delivered top-tier performances, have intrigued many with their choice to avoid the traditional 45° throwing angle. According to basic physics, a 45° launch angle should yield the maximum range for a projectile. So why are these elite throwers choosing different angles? Let’s explore the science behind this decision. The Physics Behind the 45° Angle The 45° rule is rooted in the principles of projectile motion. In an ideal environment—where air resistance is negligible, and the object is uniform in shape—launching a projectile at 45° results in the maximum horizontal distance. However, real-world javelin throwing involves factors that complicate this simple rule, such as aerodynamics, wind, and the design of the javelin itself. The Role of Aerodynamics Javelins are not simple projectiles; they are specifically...

Momentum growing towards not playing Thursday’s game” If you’re going make a statement, might as well make it lou...

Truck crashes. difference between preventable & non preventable

There’s an argument that periodically surfaces about the semantics (i.e. the meaning) of accidents vs crashes (or collisions). Some people argue that when a vehicle crashes it is never an accident because it was preventable. However, this is simplistic and, well, wrong.   https://youtu.be/cnOL-U6Dens   The word ‘accident’ describes intent. If we look at one definition of accident it is an unfortunate incident that happens unexpectedly and unintentionally, typically resulting in damage or injury. Therefore, if you throw a knife at a group of people and it hits and stabs one of them, it’s not an accident because it was deliberate; however, if you trip in the kitchen while carrying a knife and you stab someone, it is an accident. Sure, you should have perhaps been more careful, and you could have decided to carry the knife in a sheath, but the fact remains that you had no intention of stabbing the person in the second instance, you were simply moving the knife from one place...
